Abstract
Background and Aims:
E-cigarette use is a growing public health concern, especially among medical students who are future health professionals. Psychological and social factors—such as stress, peer influence, and media exposure—may contribute to this behavior. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and key determinants of nicotine vaping among university students.
Methods:
A cross-sectional study was conducted at Majmaah University with 555 students. The Data were collected via a pre-tested, self administered questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 26. Descriptive and inferential statistics (Chi-square and Fisher’s Exact tests) were applied.
Result:
Out of 555 students, 20.4% reported using nicotine-based e-cigarettes. Social determinants such as peer influence (65.5%) and cultural acceptance (55.8%) were notable. Stress (77.9%) and emotional dependence (67.5%) were prominent psychological drivers. Only 44.2% were aware of cessation clinics, and 9.7% had visited one. Awareness programs influenced 31.0% of users.
Conclusion:
One of each five students reported using nicotine vaping. Nicotine vaping is driven by stress, emotional dependence, and social influence. Limited engagement with cessation resources highlights the need for targeted prevention strategies in university settings.
